'Blacked-out' driver kills 2 pedestrians

Cape Town - Two men believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, died on Saturday morning after a driver blacked out behind the steering wheel and the vehicle struck three people on the N1 near Durban Road, Cape Town.

“The driver, a female in her late seventies, blacked out and lost control of the car around 8am this morning,” said ER24 spokesperson Annine Dormehl.

According to Dormehl, paramedics arrived at the scene to find three men next to the road. She said paramedics declared two men dead and a man believed to be 30-40 years old sustained minor injuries.

“The driver of the vehicle only sustained injuries to her forehead.”

The injured patients were transported to nearby hospitals.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the police had opened a case of culpable homicide.
