London - French chemist Renee-Maurice Gattefosse accidentally spilt lavender oil on a cut which then healed without scarring, giving rise to aromatherapy in the early 20th century

Lavender can ease anxiety instantly, with a study finding that spraying the scent calmed patients’ nerves as they waited to see their dentist.

It has sedative and anti-spasmodic qualities, with mild infusions prescribed for headaches, insomnia, fainting, convulsions, nausea, depression and even grief.

Once known as the “herb of love”, lavender oil is said to have been used by Cleopatra to seduce Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. - Daily Mail
