CoCT saddened by passing of 'jazz maestro' Errol Dyers

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town on Monday extended its condolences to the family and friends of jazz legend Errol Dyers following his death. 

Dyers died on Friday evening after a lengthy bout with a lung condition known as emphysema. He was 65.

The city in a statement said it was saddened by the loss of one of its greatest jazz legends.

 

"Dyers was indeed a guitar maestro, who brought a unique Cape Town sound to jazz music, with this distinct talent earning him the status of being one of the country’s most renowned musicians.

 

"His songs ‘Dindela’ and ‘Sugar Shake’, like many others, will forever be remembered as legendary contributions by Dyers, one of the pioneers of Cape jazz."

 

The city said his death was a huge loss for Cape Town and jazz music and said steps must be taken to ensure his legacy is kept alive through his music.
