The British husband of the bride hijacked and killed on their South African honeymoon will on Tuesday be accused of colluding in the attack, a report has said.
According to Mail Online, the dramatic claim will come from the taxi driver suspected of betraying Shrien Dewani and his Swedish wife Anni, 28, on their luxury holiday in Cape Town.Zola Tongo, 31, is said to have agreed to a plea bargain to “reveal all” in exchange for a lesser sentence.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesman in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, confirmed that the case against Tongo was to go ahead before Judge John Hlophe in the Western Cape High Court from 11.30am on Tuesday.Tongo’s lawyer, William da Grass, said “the details” of last month’s murder were expected to come to light.
Over the past two weeks, there have been police leaks alleging that Mr Dewani, 30, a millionaire businessman was involved.But the claims have always been “off the record” with no evidence presented.
The Dewanis, who had been married for two weeks, were hijacked in Gugulethu on November 13 on the way back to their five-star hotel in central Cape Town.They had agreed to take a detour through the township but within three minutes of leaving the highway, the taxi was ambushed by two gunmen.
Dewani was thrown out and his wife’s body was found later in the abandoned vehicle in Khayelitsha. She had been shot in the neck.Two men and Tongo were arrested and charged with murder.
The case of Tongo’s two co-accused – Xolile Mngeni, 23, and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, of Khayelitsha – was separated from his in the Wynberg Regional Court on Monday.Mngeni and Qwabe’s case was postponed to February 25. The men have been charged with murder, kidnapping and aggravated robbery.
On Monday a legal source said Dewani would be named during a court hearing in Cape Town as “the fourth suspect”.His spokesman, Max Clifford, has repeatedly insisted that he is nothing other than a victim.
