Cape Town - Ten thousand litres of alcohol confiscated from shebeens across the province have gone down the drain.

The booze - whisky, brandy, vodka, wine and beer - was destroyed by police under the orders of provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Arno Lamoer, on Thursday, at the Provincial Evidence Management Centre in Belhar.

The alcohol destruction was a two-fold event that included a presentation on Second Hand Goods Act by the head of the centre Colonel Jacques van Lill.

Lamoer said: “Liquor abuse is one of the biggest contributors to violence on women and children.”

He said violence against women and children was unreported and he pleaded with women to change this.

At the same event Van Lill made a presentation on the act, and asked station commanders to see that their members enforce it.

The purpose of the act was to regulate the business of secondhand goods, fight the trade of stolen goods and promote ethical standards.
