Twelve policemen will appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.

IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini said they faced charges of murder, attempted murder, theft, kidnapping, common assault, assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, and defeating the ends of justice.

The charges were related to the kidnapping and murder of 24-year-old Sidwell Mkwambi in 2009.

Several witnesses, including Mkwambi's friends, were tortured, allegedly by some of the officers, Dlamini said. - Sapa
