Johannesburg -

Sixteen people were arrested on Thursday for allegedly hijacking a building in the Johannesburg CBD, Gauteng police said.

They were nabbed in a flat, at the corner of Delvers and Kerk streets, during an operation conducted by the Hawks, police, metro police, home affairs and emergency services, Captain Pinky Tsinyane said.

“The owner started to demand his rental when the tenants refused to pay in December last year. He sent his brother to collect the rental.”

The tenants allegedly refused to pay and assaulted the man.

The 13 men and three women, aged between 22 and 37, would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon on charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, and theft. - Sapa
