Free State - Police have arrested 187 people during the recent municipal demarcation protests in Sasolburg, Free State police said on Tuesday morning.

Constable Peter Kareli said this was the total number of people arrested since the start of the protests on Sunday.

No incidents were reported on Monday night and police were keeping watch.

Residents are apparently unhappy about plans to merge Sasolburg with the Ngwathe local municipality, under which Parys falls.

On Monday, protesters set two trucks alight and injured two police officers inside a Nyala (armoured) vehicle, which had became stuck in mud.

Water cannons and rubber bullets were used to disperse the crowd.

Some residents barricaded roads and threw stones at police cars. - Sapa
