Durban - A man was sentenced to 24 years in prison by the Verulam Magistrate's Court for raping a girl, the KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said the 40-year-old man was sentenced on Monday.

On April 13 2011 the man raped a girl who was his neighbour. At the time of the incident the girl was six years old.

The man who lived in Phoenix was walking home with the girl when he forcefully dragged her into the bushes.

“The child reported the incident to her sister and she reported it to the police,” Zwane said.
