Pretoria - A serial rapist was sentenced to 27 life terms by a Pretoria High Court judge on Wednesday, after a reign of terror from 2008 to 2012. He made two of his victims pregnant.

Mcedisi David Malahle, 30, was sentenced by Judge Hennie de Vos to a life term for each count of rape.

He was also found guilty and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for each of eight counts of kidnapping, and 15 years for each of 16 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Malahle was arrested on April 6, 2012 after being identified in the North West through the assistance of informers and a DNA linkage. He was linked to 14 dockets that dated to 2008 and 2012. His victims were aged between 20 and 40.

The sentence was hailed by the police.

Acting provincial commissioner Major-General Persumal Naidoo said the sentences were appropriate as this would send a clear message that crime did not pay.

He was also hopeful the sentences would deter others who may be thinking of committing similar crimes.
