Pietermaritzburg - Three people have been arrested after they allegedly robbed and kidnapped a couple in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Major Thulani Zwane said the incident occurred in the Bishopstowe area.

“The arrested suspects, aged between 22 and 30, will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing house robbery, kidnapping and theft of motor vehicle,” he said.

Zwane said two people, a woman and her boyfriend, were in their house at Maqonqo area, Bishopstowe when they were attacked by four suspects on Saturday.

“It is alleged that they were assaulted and forced into their own white Isuzu bakkie and fled the scene with them, together with their household items such as clothing, cash, cellphone and personal documents.

“Another family member who was in the other room heard the noise and contacted the police.”

Zwane said particulars of the stolen vehicle were immediately circulated and police members spotted it at Northdale Mall. “Three suspects were arrested and all stolen goods were recovered. The fourth suspect managed to escape on foot and is still at large,” he said.

“The victims were also rescued during the arrest of the suspects.”
