Seven people were arrested in three separate drug busts in Gauteng and the Western Cape on Thursday, police said.

Five people were caught when police raided a flat in downtown Johannesburg on Thursday morning and found a large quantity of drugs, the Hawks said.

It was presumed the drugs were crushed and sold from there, spokesman Col McIntosh Polela said.

The cocaine and heroin found had an estimated street value of R2 million. Police also found R80 000 in cash.

“Fifty thousand rand of this was confiscated from a suspect who phoned to order drugs during the raid, not realising that he was speaking to one of the detectives,” said Polela.

He was arrested when he arrived to fetch the order. The group face charges of possession and dealing in drugs.

Another two people were arrested for possession of drugs in Cape Town.

A man was arrested on a street in Muizenburg on Thursday when police searched him, police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said. They found an assortment of drugs including tik, cocaine, Mandrax tablets and cash.

In an unrelated incident, a woman collecting a parcel containing cocaine with an estimated street value of R300,000 was arrested at the Cape Mail distribution centre in Epping.

“The cocaine, concealed in a steel pipe, was posted from Sao Paulo in Brazil,” said Filander. - Sapa
