700 held in week-long North West crime sweep

Johannesburg – More than 700 people were arrested for various offences within seven days in different parts of the North West province, police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the suspects were arrested during special operations conducted to ensure safety, including several day-to-day searches between August 7 and August 14, during “Operation Basadi”.

“Operation Basadi”, was a police operation conducted as part of Women’s Month, which resulted in a total of 43 arrests during the same period.

“Amongst the 707 suspects, 163 were arrested for contact crimes, mainly assaults, 24 for property related crimes, 156 for drug related crimes, including driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, 43 for possession of suspected stolen goods and many other crimes,” Mokgwabane said.

Mokgwabone said during these operations, 369 fines were issued for liquor, road traffic and second-hand goods related offences, including drinking in public and illegal dealing in liquor.

“Police managed to seize various drugs, four firearms with 12 ammunition, liquor, six vehicles, seven cattle, copper cables, counterfeit cigarettes as well as various electrical appliances,” Mokgwabane said.

Police said most of the suspects had already appeared in various courts within the province while others were expected to appear on Monday.
