The death toll from an overloaded minibus taxi crash near eNtokozweni (Machadodorp) in Mpumalanga on Monday has risen to eight, the provincial community safety department said.

The taxi, with Mozambican number plates, was pulling a trailer and carrying 24 people, including the driver, spokesman Joseph Mabuza said.

Initially seven people were declared dead on the scene and 17 others were injured, 10 critically, with the remaining passengers sustaining minor injuries.

One of the critically injured died later on Monday at Rob Ferreira hospital in Nelspruit, said Mabuza.

The driver, who was also killed, apparently lost control while negotiating a bend on the Schoemanskloof road around 6.30am, Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said. – Sapa
