TENSIONS ran high at the court appearance on Monday of a man accused of strangling, burning and hacking his girlfriend.

Imbali residents came out in their numbers and filled the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court for the bail application of Thamsanqa Justice Ntenza, 24.

They hurled insults at Ntenza as he stepped into the dock. Some were overwhelmed by emotion and began sobbing. Orderlies threatened to clear the court if people in the public gallery could not control themselves.

Ntenza, charged with the murder of Nompilo Ndlovu, 23, was expected to apply for bail on Monday, but made an about-turn and abandoned the application. Screams of, “Thank you, Jesus. Amen!” and “Rot in jail” were heard from the court gallery as he was led back to the cells. He is due back in court on February 17.

Ndlovu’s dismembered and burned body was found in a shallow grave behind Ntenza’s house on December 26. Her hands and feet had been hacked off.

Ndlovu had been studying electrical engineering at the Msunduzi FET College and was an active ANC Youth League member.

It is alleged that on the night of her murder, Ndlovu was assaulted after an argument and later strangled, burnt, hacked and buried in a shallow grave.

Police said neighbours heard Ndlovu screaming while she was being dragged around the yard, but no one went to her aid. When Ndlovu did not emerge from the house the next day, police were alerted.
