Cape Town - A man was shot dead when he left his home in the early hours of the morning allegedly to buy drugs.
Ralph Smith, 51, was gunned down just after leaving his Lotus River home at 4am on Saturday.
Relatives of the dad of one admit he was a drug addict but insist he was not a gangster.
His niece Nicolene Smith, 42, said Ralph was a scrap collector who loved helping others in the community.
“He is on drugs so we suspect he went to buy drugs because he had a R25 in his hand,” she said.
Nicolene said her son called Ralph moments before he was shot by suspected gangsters.
“We ran to the scene but when we got there he was already dead,” she added.
“He was shot through his ribs and throat.”
The police’s Captain FC van Wyk said that no suspects have been arrested.
“[Ralph] sustained several gunshot wounds to his body and died at the scene. A murder case was opened for investigation,” he said.
Van Wyk said that police are still investigating the motive for the attack.
