Mafikeng - An application has been brought to the High Court in Mafikeng to compel the Matlosana municipality to pay Eskom money owed for electricity supply, AfriForum said on Friday.

“We want the municipality to honour its commitment to Eskom and to prohibit Eskom from cutting the electricity supply to Klerksdorp and Jouberton,” the organisation said in a statement.

“We have decided to assist because residents are not getting any answers from the municipality... AfriForum receives complaints on a daily basis about poor service delivery.”

Matlosana includes the towns of Klerksdorp, Orkney, and Hartebeesfontein.

AfriForum intervened when residents of Klerksdorp and Jouberton township were notified that their electricity would be cut on March 14, 2013 because the municipality had failed to pay its electricity bill to Eskom.

“The municipality neglected to pay its outstanding account of over R91 million.

“The failure to honour these commitments boils down to contravention of the municipality's constitutional duty to deliver local services.”

The application was first brought before the court on Friday and would be heard next month. - Sapa
