Durban - An alleged member of an AK-47-wielding robber gang has been nabbed and police are hot on the heels of other members of the group.

Senzo Ntombela, 33, was arrested in Durban and appeared briefly at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he was remanded in custody until July 14 for a possible bail application.

Ntombela was arrested at the weekend in a joint effort by the Organised Crime Unit and the Combined Action Team.

He is alleged to have been part of a gang that terrorised a Mountain Rise businessman and his family earlier this month.

Ismail Dhoda was followed to his Mountain Rise home by a gang of at least 12 robbers brandishing AK-47 rifles.

They confronted him and then ransacked his home.

Two security company owners, who were alerted to the incident, arrived at the scene while the robbery was in progress, only to walk into a hail of gunfire.

CCTV footage from the scene showed how a robber opened fire on Shameel Ally of Ilanga security and Shaheen Suleman of Magma Security.

Suleman was shot in the cheek, but has since recovered.

Midlands SAPS spokesman Constable Mthokozisi Ngobese said police hoped to link Ntombela to other cases.

He also confirmed that further arrests were imminent.
