Johannesburg - A man who allegedly shot dead his two stepchildren, was killed in a shoot-out with police in Phoagoaneng village in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo police said on Saturday.

Colonel Ronel Otto said police went to the village on Friday night after they received information that the 39-year-old had been spotted drinking in a tavern there.

“However when the police entered, the man pulled out his own firearm and fired shots.”

Police returned fire and the man was killed in the ensuing shoot-out.

The man was alleged to have killed his eight and 10-year-old step-daughters on Wednesday.

He apparently fetched the stepdaughters and a son from their grandmother's house and took them to his wife's workplace.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said at the time, “Seemingly, he could not talk to her as she was busy and apparently (he) went back outside. Without uttering any words he fired two shots killing one (of the girls) while the other one fled.”

The man then returned to the grandmother's home with his youngest child, a two-year-old boy. Along the way he handed the boy to a friend.

He found the older girl at the grandmother's house. He allegedly shot her twice at close range and ran away.

Mulaudzi said the motive for the killing was unclear. The boy had since been reunited with his mother. - Sapa
