Pretoria - A suspected drug dealer was shot and killed on Thursday during a scuffle with a police officer, while the constable is reported to have suffered injuries inflicted by a sharp object.
The suspect allegedly threatened to kill the student constable as he chased him, jumping fences of houses in Philip Nel Park.
Pretoria West station commander Colonel Caroline Naidoo said the alleged drug dealer threatened to kill the officer if he apprehended him. “If you catch me I will kill you,” he is reported to have said.
The drama started at the border of the Quaggas Rand Mall Golf Course in Pretoria West after two patrolling police officers spotted the alleged drug dealer.
“The officers saw him dealing and approached him, but he ran away. They chased after him,” Naidoo said.
The suspect was jumping over fences from one house to another to get away from police. One officer chased the suspect on foot. “While the officer was chasing the suspect he threatened to kill him.”
When they reached the perimeter of the golf course, a scuffle broke out. The officer was injured on his left arm and body. His uniform was also torn. The officer was attacked with a sharp object The scuffle continued and shots were fired, Naidoo said.
Police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila said the officer fired three shots, one wounding the suspect. “The suspect later died of his injuries. A big knife, a pair of scissors and three cellphones were found at the scene. Police also confiscated drugs, nyaope and dagga, estimated at R5 000,” Malila said.
The officer was taken to hospital where he was treated and later released. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating. Police have opened a murder case and are probing a case of possession of drugs and an attack on police officer.
