Durban - After a chase and a shoot-out, Berea police have arrested an alleged drug runner and recovered numerous packets of cocaine.
Police sources said the suspect was a notorious dealer in the Berea area.
Undercover officers made the arrest after buying drugs from the suspect in Hurst Grove Road, Berea, on Wednesday night.
The police approached the suspect who was in a car, but they had to jump out of the way as the suspect sped off, attempting to run over the officers.
The police officers shot at the vehicle in an attempt to stop the driver, but the suspect allegedly returned fire as they made their getaway.
A high-speed chase then ensued through the streets of Berea and into the Durban CBD, where the suspect was cornered.
Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said: “We can confirm the incident that took place in Berea area on Wednesday night, where a 30-year-old suspect resisted arrest and attempted to run over a police officer.
“It is alleged that the suspect fired shots and fled the scene. He was arrested and charged with possession of drugs, attempted murder, resisting arrest as well as reckless and negligence driving.”
The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
