Johannesburg - A Johannesburg court has denied bail to an alleged drug mule who had allegedly attempted to smuggle R1 million worth of drugs through OR Tambo airport.

Roxana Quipos Rivas, 44, was arrested at OR Tambo on Tuesday after drugs were found in a false compartment in her suitcase. The drugs have an estimated street value of just over a million rand.

Rivas was en route to Maputo from Sao Paulo and had been travelling on a Peruvian issued passport.

The Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court denied her bail as she does not have a fixed address in South Africa and postponed the matter to September 18 for further investigation.

Hers was the second arrest of an alleged drug smuggler at OR Tambo airport in less than a week.

Forty-two-year-old Sinikiwe De Sousa, who also travelled from Sao Paulo, was arrested on Saturday. She appeared in the Kempton Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of dealing in drugs.

Police confiscated drugs estimated to be worth over R1.2 million allegedly hidden in books in her luggage.

She will apply for bail on July 29.
