Carletonville - Twelve illegal miners accused of gang raping a woman near Driefontein in Carletonville appeared in the Carletonville Magistrate's Court on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said the men would remain in custody until they appeared again on March 4.

A group of nine men allegedly approached the 23-year-old woman while she was walking home with a friend last week. They allegedly hit her on the head with a knobkerrie, dragged her to nearby bushes, and raped her. The men then took the woman to a shack where another three men raped her.

Her friend ran away unharmed. - Sapa
