Cape Town - The blood of an alleged gangster of Hanover Park flowed in Downberg Street on Friday after his head was bashed in with a brick.

According to a source, the body of a man only identified as “Giffie” was discovered by Metro Police on Friday shortly after 11pm.

The 18-year-old man, whom the source says is a member of the Americans gang, died after being shot in the leg and his head bashed in with a brick.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms the incident and says Philippi police are investigating a murder case.

“According to information police attended to the complaint at the address and upon their arrival they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his leg and head injury. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. No one has been arrested at this stage,” she says.

Philippi Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson, Ebrahim Abrahams, says the community is no longer shocked by the violent murders of gangsters.

“As long as we are not united, the gangsters will continue to rule Hanover Park. We have to take a stand together and work with each other and with the police, or we will never get anywhere.

“Whenever something like this happens and the police come out you will hear people say ‘Ek wiet niks’ or ‘ek het niks gesien nie’. The CPF is concerned about the safety of the community when these things happen but we need the community to unite,” he says.
