Police have arrested Johan Kotze, who is accused of orchestrating a gruesome assault on his estranged wife and killing his teenage stepson, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

"The elusive Johan Kotze, who evaded police capture has finally been arrested," said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

"He was arrested this morning in Modimolle at about 11.45 am. He has been on the run since last week... The suspect will appear before the Modimolle Magistrate's Court soon."

Kotze, 50, had been on the run since the assault and murder in Modimolle on January 4.

He allegedly forced three men at gunpoint, believed to be his workers, to participate in the attack.

Kotze also stands accused of killing the woman's son by shooting him in the chest and head.

One of the three workers, a 42-year-old man, was arrested in Makapanstad near Hammanskraal north of Pretoria earlier on Wednesday.

"The suspect is expected to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Friday pending further police investigations," said Mulaudzi.

He was one of three men wanted for the attack.

On Tuesday night, police recovered Kotze's Toyota Fortuner in Modimolle and Mulaudzi warned that his arrest was imminent.

The provincial commissioner, Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe, has commended the team of investigators who arrested Kotze.

He said the arrest had brought relief to the victim and her family. - Sapa
