Brits - Three men accused of murdering a North West policeman appeared briefly in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The case was postponed to March 4, for Ndoda Mathibefazi and Jonathan Seloane to apply for legal aid and for Samuel Marothodi Maphanga’s lawyer to be present.

Maphanga, Mathibefazi and Seloane allegedly shot and killed Warrant Officer Sipho Sithole in Letlhabile near Brits in November.

Sithole, 48, was in his car when he was approached by the three men. They allegedly shot him in the chest and fled with his car. He was rushed to hospital where he later died. His car was found in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.

Mathibefazi and Seloane were expected to apply for bail while Maphanga has been denied bail.

On February 5, Maphanga and Mathibefazi did not appear in court after four awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from a police van they were all being transported in from Mogwase prison to the Brits Magistrate’s Court.

North West police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said Chris Sithole, 24, Alfonzo Mpofu, 25, Gibson Msimango, 25, all from Zimbabwe, and Gontse Lubisi, 27, from Ga-Rankuwa north of Pretoria escaped.

Maphanga and Mathibefazi, together with two other men, did not escape.

Mpofu and Lubisi have been re-arrested. Mpofu was arrested in Majakaneng, south of Brits, on Tuesday, while Lubisi was arrested in Mmakau, near Ga-Rankuwa, on Wednesday.
