Durban - A man who allegedly raped a woman at the weekend and then fell asleep was arrested after the victim fled, locking the house behind her.

The 28-year-old suspect is to appear in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape and robbery, at a date to be confirmed.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Thulani Zwane, the man was arrested after falling asleep in the home of his alleged victim on Sunday. The 39-year-old woman was confronted by the man, wielding a bush knife.

“The suspect threatened the victim and demanded her cash card as well as her PIN code for her bank account.

“He went to the bank where he allegedly withdrew cash and came back, threatened the victim again and raped her in her house,” Zwane said.

The man was said to have fallen asleep beside the woman, who then fled.

Police arrived at the house and found the suspect still sleeping.
