An alleged rapist who had part of his lip bitten off by his victim was arrested by police after he tried to open a case of assault against her.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the 31-year-old man from Rustenburg had, after the alleged rape on Thursday morning, gone straight to the Dobsonville police station to report a case of assault.

The man could barely talk, according to Makhubela, and police took him to Leratong Hospital near Krugersdorp.

Later that day, said Makhubela, the family of an alleged rape victim reported the incident to the Dobsonville police station.

The victim, a 17-year-old, was found in the veld where the rape took place in Doornkop just before 6am on Thursday .

A passer-by who witnessed the rape notified the victim’s family. The rape survivor, who had stab wounds on her face and lower abdomen, was rushed to hospital.

“The family gave the police the same description of the man whose lower lip was bitten off. The officers were immediately aware of the suspect after he had pitched up earlier to open an assault case,” said Makhubela.

“He told the cops he was involved in a fight with a woman.”

The man was arrested on Thursday afternoon as he climbed into a taxi after leaving hospital.

He was due to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s court on Monday. - The Star
