Sawoti, KwaZulu-Natal -
Two people have been arrested for allegedly killing a businessman and his bodyguard in a mob attack in Sawoti, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.
Colonel Jay Naicker said the two men were among a mob of job-seekers accused of killing the men on Monday.
The job-seekers were apparently promised employment when they paid the man R300 each to register with his company.
“They were to be trained in farming skills and were promised to be paid R1,300 each. The employer failed to pay them, so they demanded their money back from him,” said Naicker.
The man apparently had three bodyguards with him when the mob confronted him. One of the bodyguards fired into the crowd, hitting two people, one of whom later died. The other was wounded.
Two of the bodyguards ran away.
The mob allegedly assaulted the businessman and the remaining bodyguard, pushed them under their car and set them alight.
Naicker said the two men arrested would appear in the Umzinto Magistrate's Court on Monday.
He said more arrests were expected. - Sapa
