Durban - Two ANC branch leaders were shot dead on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast after attending a meeting, the party said on Monday.

The African National Congress condemned the shooting of Oshabeni branch chairman Dumisani Malunga and branch secretary Bheki Chiliza.

“We are very concerned with the killing of our comrades. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated,” ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said in a statement.

“We would like to express shock and disgust at the latest killing and we would also like to send our condolences to members of their families.”

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that the Mehlomnyama police were investigating the murders, and said no arrests had been made.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) condemned the shooting.

Chiliza was Numsa's south coast chairman.

“We... are suspicious that the murder of the two comrades is politically motivated,” Numsa regional secretary Mbuso Ngubane said.

“We are deeply worried that political differences are now being resolved through the barrel of a gun, and no longer through established congress movement traditions of political persuasion and robust engagements.”

In July, ANC councillor Wandile Mkhize was shot dead in a drive-by shooting near his home in Manaba, Margate. Nhlakanipho Shabane, who was with him at the time, spent three weeks in a coma before dying in hospital.
