Johannesburg - The Gauteng ANC on Wednesday condemned the violence and burning in Mohlakeng, outside Randfontein, during protest action.

“The ANC Gauteng Province strongly condemns the criminal violence, burning of community facilities and the Randfontein mayor's house today,” said spokesman Dumisa Ntuli in a statement.

According to Ntuli, the library, economic hub, maternity clinic, home affairs offices as well as mayor Sylvia Thebenare's house were set on fire.

“We call upon the SA Police Service to act swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators of this violence.”

On Wednesday morning police said roads were barricaded and tyres burnt during the service delivery protest.

Randfontein police spokeswoman Captain Appel Ernst said the group had applied on Tuesday for a peaceful service delivery protest and it was granted for 9am to 3pm.

“But they started at 4am,” she said.

Earlier Gauteng co-operative governance and human settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo said the EFF was responsible for the protest. The EFF denied this and blamed the ANC for the violence.
