Johannesburg - An ANC ward councillor from Middelburg is due in court next week, along with her husband, on charges of assault and armed robbery, City Press reported on Sunday.

They are accused of offering female hitchhikers travelling on highways between Middelburg and Springs a lift, then robbing them at gunpoint, police Captain Khanyisile Zwane told the newspaper.

“One of the complainants saw her in Middelburg after the incident and found out she was a councillor. She then immediately went to police. The other woman took her registration number and reported the incident to the police,” said Zwane.

The couple was arrested two weeks ago and are due to appear in the Springs Magistrate's court on Wednesday. - Sapa
