Cape Town - Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille says ANC councillor Loyiso Nkohla called in sick and bunked a council meeting on Wednesday so he could lead thousands of protesters into the city.
She made the claim in a radio interview on Thursday.
Nkohla would not be drawn on the allegation on Thursday morning, saying he had not heard the mayor’s interview.
The Cape Argus tried to establish from the council Speaker Dirk Smit whether Nkohla had indeed called in sick on Wednesday but he was in a meeting and confirmation could not be obtained by publication time.
Labour lawyer Michael Bagraim, commenting on Nkohla’s alleged “fake” sick day, said it would amount to fraud and Nkohla could lose his job as a councillor.
Bagraim, speaking in his capacity as chairman of the Cape Chamber of Commerce human capital portfolio, said a culture of taking fake sick leave had become a serious problem in the city’s workforce over the past year.
