Alabama, Klerksdorp -
An ANC North West official was shot dead outside his house in Alabama, Klerksdorp on Friday morning, said police.
“No other people were injured in the shooting.... A murder docket has been opened,” said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.
David Mosiane Chika, 33, stopped his vehicle at the gate at 1am and told his wife not to leave the house because he had seen someone lurking outside. He went to investigate.
Ngubane said Chika's wife heard a gunshot followed by footsteps. Someone jumped the fence and ran to a car parked outside the yard.
She screamed for help and went to check on her husband.
Neighbours helped her take him to Klerksdorp Hospital, but he was certified dead shortly after arrival.
“The deceased had only one bullet wound in the stomach,” said Ngubane.
North West premier Thandi Modise said the police should leave no stone unturned to bring those responsible to book.
“The heartless criminals behind the campaign of terror that nearly claimed the life of (ANC North West) provincial secretary Kabelo Mataboge a few weeks back are desperate and should be put behind bars soonest. Cde Chika like Cde Moss Phakoe should find justice,” she said.
Phakoe, 52, who was an ANC councillor, was shot dead on March 14, 2009, in his car in Rustenburg when he arrived home after putting up posters for the ANC's election campaign.
Two people were later convicted of the murder. One of them was sentenced to 20 years in jail and the other to life imprisonment
Modise said a number of officials in the province had been the target of violent crime in the past few weeks.
“The provincial government wants to know who is behind these assassinations (and attempted assassinations),” she said.
ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said the shooting was a reflection of people fighting for positions in the party.
“People think if you are in a particular position you are an obstacle. They want to remove you.”
Chika was from the Kenneth Kaunda region, Mantashe said in a televised business briefing. - Sapa
