Port Elizabeth - ANC ward candidate Nceba Dywili was gunned down in the Zwide township of Port Elizabeth in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday night, his family has confirmed.

Fighting back tears while speaking to Independent Media on Wednesday morning, Dywili’s mother, Nonzame, said her son was “gunned down in Zwide while dropping of an ANC volunteer. The details are still sketchy and we don’t know the motive behind his murder”.

Nonzame said she had last seen her son on Monday,

Nonzame described her son as someone who was “very dedicated to the ANC”.

Police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo confirmed the councillor was killed in Zwide on Tuesday night.

Dywili was an ANC councillor candidate for ward 4 in Walmer Township.

On Wednesday morning, Dywili’s colleague, Marion Harning, published a Facebook post on his passing.

The post read: "Just yesterday…our cllr candidate for Ward 4, Walmer was doing election work in the community with Min Sisulu. Late last night he was gunned down …. oh how angry and sad we feel.. oh the many memories of serving the ANC together we share..oh his wife and children..oh all those whose lives he would have improved in Council..oh the waste, the pain, the cruelty.. Dear God..take our soldier of the people in your arms ..he joins all our struggle heroes who have gone before..rest in peace Nceba Dywili we will never forget you.."

The regional ANC is yet to comment on the killing.
