Violence has flared up in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, after the bodies of two toddlers were found in a toilet cubicle, according to a report.
Police have been deployed to the area, the SABC reported.
The girls, aged two and three, are believed to have been murdered and were found less than 100m from where a five-year-old girl was snatched just over a month ago.
“We are investigating kidnapping and murder,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini regarding Thursday morning’s grisly discovery.
He said the girls had been missing since Saturday and police had been looking for them. “At about 5am a member of the community used the toilet and found them.”
At the time of publication, police did not know the extent of the injuries the children had suffered.
There was a heavy police presence and roads were blocked off as investigators and pathologists combed the scene.
They held up a large blue tarpaulin to hide the bodies from view of the media and the several hundred residents who had gathered at the scene.
The communal toilets are on a dirt road named Oyster Street and are less than 100m from Anelisa Mkhondo’s home.
Anelisa’s body was found last month in a rubbish heap in another area in Diepsloot.
“What happened on the same street, it’s not nice (sic),” said Lizzy Chauke, the deputy chairwoman of the South African National Civic Organisation.
“(Anelisa’s) family is still traumatised, they need strong counselling,” she said.
Chauke said the two girls found on Thursday morning had been playing outside their home when they went missing. “Enough is enough,” she said.
According to an EWN report, Diepsloot residents have now vowed to take the law into their own hands if they catch anyone suspected of the murders.
