A Pietermaritzburg man who tried to calm down an angry policeman has been shot dead.

The policeman then turned the gun on himself.

The incident happened on Sunday night in West Street, in the city centre.

Policeman Gift Mchunu, 25, a detective at the Plessislaer police station, had allegedly been threatening his girlfriend’s sister.

According to police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane, Mfiswa Dlangisa, 27, saw what was happening and approached Mchunu to try to calm the situation. Mchunu allegedly got into an altercation with Dlangisa.

He shot Dlangisa twice before turning the gun on himself. Both men died on the pavement.
