Durban - A community in the Camperdown area is under assault after another attack on a resident on Wednesday evening.

A Durban hospital clinical director’s quick thinking foiled a robbery at his home in Killarney Valley, in Camperdown.

The drama unfolded as the man, whose family asked for his identity to be withheld, arrived home at about 9.30pm.

Triple S security divisional manager Neville Mipping, who responded to the incident, said five men attacked the man while he was still in his car.

The attackers had been hiding in dense bush surrounding the property.

“They forced him into the house and started to ransack the place, but only escaped with a cellphone and R1 400 in cash after he hit the panic button. They fled when they heard cars coming,” he said.

The man sustained wounds to his face from the shattered window.

His wife said he was doing “fine”. She was away on holiday when the incident happened.

Mipping said there has been a spate of break-ins in the Cato Ridge area towards the end of last year, which subsided when a gang was ambushed in a Hammarsdale tavern last month.

“Now there is a new group targeting the area,” he said.

Mipping said he was adamant a syndicate was behind the attacks as “all the victims are attacked in a similar way”.

The “sticky tape gang” cover their victims’ mouths with tape, tie their hands and demand valuables.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane confirmed the attack.
