Cape Town - An MTN store in Strand Square, Strand, became the latest to be hit in a string of robberies as criminals apparently target the cellular provider.

At least five MTN stores have been hit in greater Cape Town over the past month.

Three armed robbers attacked the store just after 9.45am on Saturday, holding the staff at gunpoint.

Police spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said a case of armed robbery had been opened.

One of the robbers entered the store, at the corner of Fagan and Main roads, and held the two female staff members at gunpoint. The second robber stood outside the store as a lookout, while the third robber waited in their getaway vehicle, a blue Toyota.

The robbers forced the two women to open the safe to gain access to the store’s stock. The robbers fled with an undisclosed sum of cash and 45 contract cellphones worth an estimated R180 000.

No arrests have been made.

MTN spokeswoman Bridget Bhengu said the company had started its own investigation.

“We do not have the details at this point, but we have been able to block the stolen phones and prevent them from being used,” she said.

Another MTN store robbed in ther two robberies reported at an Ottery store just two months apart.

Last month three gunmen held up the Ottery store for the second time, fleeing with 76 cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Bhengu said: “We are in the process of intensifying our security and working closely with the police to ensure that this does not happen again.”
