A policeman has been shot dead by two men in Elliot, outside Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

The 44-year-old sergeant, attached to the Elliot visible policing unit, was shot by two men as he approached his house at 6.30pm on Wednesday, said Lieutenant-Colonel Sibongile Soci.

The policeman died at the scene. The two gunmen ran away.

“At this stage the motive for attack is still unknown,” said Soci.

He was the second police officer killed in the province this week.

A 33-year-old constable was shot dead while on patrol in Veeplaas, Port Elizabeth, on Monday. Her 36-year-old colleague was critically wounded.

Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta has condemned the murders.

“It is very infuriating and ravaging to hear that we have yet again lost another member of our (SA Police Service) family in the hands of merciless scoundrels,” she said.

No arrests had been made in either case. – Sapa
