Cape Town - Armed criminals disguised as contract workers robbed the Woolworths store in Canal Walk on Monday.

According to police the incident occurred at about 7.30am when the four suspects overpowered security guards at the store.

Three of the attackers were armed and dressed as contract workers.

The brazen gang reportedly made off with till floats they had stolen from the store’s safe, which contained an undisclosed amount of money.

The Woolworths store was not yet open at the time of the robbery and there were no staff inside.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed a business robbery case was registered for investigation.

“It is alleged that four suspects of which three were armed and dressed as contract workers, overpowered security personnel and took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in a white Toyota Verso,” said Van Wyk.

“No injuries were sustained and no shorts were fired.”

Captain Van Wyk says no arrests have been made yet.

On Monday, shoppers went about their business with only some aware of what had happened earlier in the day.

One shoppers, who didn’t want to be identified, said that they were shocked when they heard about the robbery.

The 32-year-old woman said: “These robbers have become even more brazen, to rob a store inside a mall that has so much security takes some guts.

“From what I hear there were four of them who were dressed as construction workers.

“They must have been watching the place to have known that there is some construction going on here at the mall and that nobody would look at them funny dressed like that and being at the mall so early in the morning.

“They were organised and knew what they were doing.

“I’m glad nobody was hurt.”
