Eight unlicensed firearms were found in a home in Boksburg North, Johannesburg on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

“Following a tip-off eight unlicenced firearms and 13 941 rounds of ammunition were seized in a private dwelling in Steyn Street in the early hours of today,” said spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

The owner of the house, a man in his early forties, was arrested and expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of illegal possession of unlicensed firearms.

“Eleven firearms were found in a small bedroom... .These firearms include two .270 calibre rifles, two .22 rifles, an R1

rifle, a shotgun, a .303 rifle, two 9mm pistols and two 7.65

calibre pistols.

Three of the firearms were licenced, the others unlicenced.

Lungelo said some of the ammunition belonged to police stores.

It was not yet clear how the man got the firearms and “investigations are continuing. All the firearms will be sent for ballistic examination”. -
