Durban - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has welcomed the arrests of two men accused of killing two of its branch leaders in KwaZulu-Natal.

“We praise the police for the arrests, and we urge them to work hard to ensure that the killers are convicted,” provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said in a statement.

KwaZulu-Natal police arrested the men on Monday afternoon.

“They were taken in yesterday afternoon (Monday), and after questioning it was realised there was a direct link between the men and the committing of the offence,” said Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

Dumisani Malunga, 42, and Bheko Chiliza, 39, were shot dead on their way back from an African National Congress meeting on Sunday night.

Zikalala called on community members to help the police with information related to the killings.

“The ANC denounces the killing of our comrades, and call on the public to volunteer information which will help the law enforcement agencies to put a stop to this scourge.”

The arrested men were expected to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

In July, ANC councillor Wandile Mkhize was shot dead in a drive-by shooting near his home in Manaba, Margate. Nhlakanipho Shabane, who was with him at the time, spent three weeks in a coma before dying in hospital.
