Durban -

A bridge under construction in KwaMashu was set on fire on Thursday, allegedly by disgruntled workers who wanted more money.

“It took about three-and-a-half hours to extinguish the flames,” said the divisional commander of the uMhlanga Fire Department, Bheki Hadebe.

He said they were called to the scene just before 9am. When fire crews arrived they learnt construction workers were apparently on strike.

He said the timber supporting the railway bridge being built near KwaMashu’s Bridge City shopping centre was on fire and they had to use two water tankers, two rescue pumpers and a hydraulic platform to put out the blaze.

“The motive is unknown at this stage,” said police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

“KwaMashu police are investigating a case of arson. No arrests have been made at this stage.”

The construction company did not respond to questions. - Daily News
