Cape Town - Internationally acclaimed artist and photographer Zwelethu Mthethwa, charged with murder, appeared in the Western Cape High Court on Friday.

The State indicated it had provided further particulars to the 53-year-old's defence team.

Judge President John Hlophe granted a postponement until May 23 for another pre-trial conference.

Mthethwa, smartly dressed in a black jacket, white shirt and dark pants, struggled to hear the postponement date and politely asked the interpreter to repeat what he had said.

Out on bail of R100 000, he then left the dock quickly and quietly.

He has been charged with the murder of 23-year-old alleged sex worker Nokuphila Kumalo (SUBS: CORRECT).

The State alleges that Mthethwa “kicked and stomped her body repeatedly with a booted foot” in Woodstock last April.

Mthethwa, born in Durban, is known for his large-format colour photographs, paintings and pastels of people in townships, informal settlements and rural areas.

He has exhibited widely in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa and Switzerland.
