Johannesburg - Joburg metro police have described as “very bizarre” an incident during which a motorist assaulted an officer who was issuing a taxi driver with a fine.

The man, 41, is alleged to have stopped his car on the side of the road, got into a confrontation with the metro police officer about the fine, and assaulted him. Both then wrestled each other on the ground.

A female police officer, who had been sitting in the patrol vehicle, came to the rescue of her colleague and handcuffed the man. The officer was taken to hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

Metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said: “We would like to know what would motivate someone to stop on the side of the road, get out of their car, go to an officer and ask why he is giving out a fine.”
