Limpopo - Six men will appear in the Waterval Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly planning to blow up ATMs, Limpopo police said.

They would also face charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and explosives, and robbery, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Police received a tip off about a group men in Njhakanjhaka village in Waterval allegedly planning to bomb ATMs in Gauteng.

When police went to arrest the group on Tuesday morning they were shot at. One officer was injured and a police van damaged. The men fled the scene. Investigations led to the arrest of one of them in Soshanguve, near Pretoria, on Thursday, and five others later that day.

Police confiscated an R4 rifle, a 9mm pistol and explosives. The pistol had been stolen during the hijacking of a police officer in Seshego in 2011. - Sapa
