Comment on this story

A “high-profile” person was expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Thursday in connection with ATM crimes, according to a report on Thursday.

The Cape Times newspaper reported that this person and another person were arrested on Monday in a joint operation by the Hawks and the United States Secret Service.

They were apprehended at Cape Town International Airport and were found with five skimming devices (which copy bank card details), seven IDs, 17 bank cards and six flash drives.

Captain Frederick van Wyk refused to tell the newspaper whether the arrests were linked to the recent spate of ATM bombings in Cape Town.

Two men and a women were arrested in separate, but linked operations on Monday in the Helderberg area. Police confiscated skimming devices, large amounts of money and Mandrax tablets. – Sapa
