Cape Town - An attorney who allegedly stole millions from a trust account, appeared in a court in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Anthony Peter Reynolds, 52, of Airlie Place, Constantia, was not asked to plead when he appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Bellville before magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg.

The matter was postponed to September 1 to give defence lawyer William King an opportunity to view video footage that is be presented to the court during the trial.

According to the charge sheet, Reynolds was admitted to practice as an attorney in 1995, and commenced practice as a professional assistant.

Eight years later, he started his own practice as Roup Reynolds and Associates.

He faces one count of theft involving R6 million, three of fraud and one of relating to his alleged failure to keep proper books of account, as required by the Attorneys’ Act.

Two fraud counts relate to dishonoured cheques allegedly issued from his trust account, while on the third count prosecutor Juan Agulhas alleges that Reynolds falsely informed a potential buyer of a property in Constantia that the dwelling was unencumbered.

Reynolds is due back in court on September 1.
