A Middelburg audiologist was found dead in a ditch in Verena, near eMalahleni in Mpumalanga, police said on Thursday.

Lt-Col Leonard Hlathi said the body of 33-year-old Igna Nortje was found on Wednesday around 7pm, near her abandoned car.

“The woman was found with stab wounds to her throat and a toy gun was found next to her body.”

He said the woman's husband Riaan reported her missing earlier on Wednesday.

“The husband reported her missing in Middelburg when he could not get hold of her on Wednesday.”

Hlathi said the husband phoned close friends as well as the places she intended visiting on Wednesday, but no one had seen her.

While searching for clues at the couple's home in Middelburg, police found that only a gas gun was missing from an open safe.

“Only the gas gun was gone, while there were other, real guns in the safe.”

He said police were investigating.

The couple had a eight-year-old girl, Mia, the Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday.
